I know we’ve written blogs in the past on how good GPS units are when going on a driving holiday but I was wondering if hearing stories about GPS units leading drivers down wrong roads etc. would put you off hiring a GPS unit while driving overseas?
When I was in America a few years ago I was told a story of how a couple had gone on a driving holiday throughout Italy and ended up with their car wedged down a narrow stairway after their GPS unit had told them to drive that way. Driving throughout the city in Sydney sometimes sends my GPS crazy but surely common sense would tell you not to drive down a narrow street that leads to a stairway…maybe not.
Every now and again you get the odd story on the news about drivers ending up in dams or crashing their cars during the night when their GPS has led them down wrong turnings or streets. Personally I wouldn’t be able to drive in a different country without a GPS so the thought of hiring a car without one doesn’t even cross my mind, that and the fact that I can’t read a map to save my life!
Driving with a GPS is mainly about convenience and being told where to go step by step rather than having to remember the route you want to take or having to deal with those awkward in car fights with the designated map reader. Could this convenience be making us concentrate less on where we are actually driving then if we used a map? Are these embarrassing accidents avoidable?
Who really knows.
Would these GPS incidents put you off hiring a GPS unit or do you have your own GPS ‘horror’ story? Let us know!
